How to migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify without losing the URLs that already rank

A practical sequence for moving products, customers, content and redirects — written for merchants who cannot afford a “we will fix SEO later” cutover.

ElvoApps is a Shopify technology and growth partner. This guide is the migration cluster’s starting point: how a WooCommerce store should move to Shopify when search traffic already pays the bills.

If you want ElvoApps to run the project, use the Shopify migration page. If you are scoping it internally, use the sequence below.

1. Inventory what actually exists

Export products, variations, customers, orders, pages and posts. Then export the list of URLs Google already knows — Search Console is more honest than your permalink settings. You are not migrating “the site.” You are migrating objects plus every path that still earns impressions.

2. Decide Shopify’s information model

WooCommerce variable products do not always map 1:1 to Shopify variants. Attributes that were used as filters may become options, tags or metafields. Make that decision on paper before the first import, or Shopify will invent products you then have to merge.

3. Map URLs before you design the theme

Product, category, page and post permalinks need a destination on Shopify. Collection handles, product handles and blog slugs are not cosmetic. They are the 301 table. A pretty theme with broken redirects is a rebrand Google did not ask for.

4. Stage the import

Use an unpublished Shopify store. Check variant counts, images, sales channels and a sample of orders. Customer passwords will not copy cleanly from WordPress; plan the invite or reset experience so support is not surprised on Monday.

5. Redirects, canonicals, sitemaps

Load 301s as an audited list. Confirm Shopify canonical tags do not fight your old URLs. Submit the new sitemap and stop advertising the old one. Watch coverage for weeks, not hours. More detail lives in our SEO migration notes.

6. Cut over operations, not just DNS

Payments, shipping, apps, inventory location and staff accounts have to move with the catalog. A store that “looks live” but cannot fulfil is not migrated.
